Understanding
Your Electric Bill
Understanding your electric bill can provide
answers to many questions about your electric service. Each month
you will receive a bill for the service used during the past billing
period. Billing periods are as close to 30 days as possible. Bills
are based upon meter readings or estimated energy usage. Bills are
calculated according to rates approved by state regulatory authorities.
Payments may be made automatically from your
authorized account. This can save you time and postage each month.
It also provides on-time payment even when you are away from home,
so you'll never have a late payment charge. Payments may also be
made at most banks/financial institutions and at your local BHP
office.
How does BHP measure your electrical usage?
Measuring your usage is done by kilowatt-hours
(kWh). A kWh is the basic unit of electric energy equal to one kilowatt
for one hour. A kilowatt-hour is 1,000 watts used for one hour.
For example, if you have ten 100-Watt light bulbs on at one time,
the demand is 1,000 Watts or 1 kilowatt (kW). If they remain on
for one hour, the energy used is one kilowatt-hour (kWh).
Your local BHP service office can provide additional
information. The location and telephone number are shown on your
bill and in the phone book. Good service is important and we encourage
you to contact us whenever you need information about your bill
or services.

Energy usage depends on wattage and hours of
use. Lighting, water heating, air conditioning, and space heating
costs may be estimated by wattage.
Your Rate Code is listed on the back of the
bill. Energy management rates which may lower your cost are also
available. If you should have any questions about the rate you are
being billed under, please contact your local BHP customer service
office. Rate pamphlets are available at all BHP customer service
