Portable electric space heaters can be
used as a supplemental heating source when existing systems
are inadequate or to save heating costs by heating occupied
rooms only while the main thermostat is turned down. They
are a safe, clean and most economical supplemental heating
source.
Portable heaters are available in a variety
of sizes. Up to a 1,500-watt heater can be used on most 110-volt
outlets. One heater is usually adequate to heat a 150-square-foot
room.
Different types of portable heaters include
the convection, hydronic convection, and radiant heaters.
The convection heater contains heating elements that warm
the surrounding air and creates convection currents that circulate
throughout the room.
Hydronic
(hot water) electric units are similar in appearance to other
heaters but differ in construction and operation. Water is
heated by an electric heating element and circulated through
a distribution tube. Heat is conducted to fins and dispersed
into the air.
Radiant heaters do not heat air. They
radiate heat directly to room objects and people. Once heated,
the objects transfer heat to the surrounding air, increasing
the air temperature.
