What is a whole-house surge protector?
The
whole-house protector provides protection against surges that
could enter your home from the electric service. These surges
could be caused by lightning, trees and limbs in power lines,
downed power lines, severe weather, or animals coming in contact
with power lines – just to name a few.
Where is the whole-house surge protector
installed?
The unit is installed at the service entrance and
mounted on the meter can.
How much does the whole-house protector
cost?
BHP
sells the protector for $93.95 plus sales tax. The installation
can be arranged by BHP at an additional cost. Installation usually
takes less than 30 minutes and is done by an electrician.
How does the whole-house protector
work?
When the unit sees a high voltage spike greater
than 800V, it routes the energy to ground. Basically, it acts
like a short circuit during high voltage spikes and an open point
during normal power conditions. The unit has an audible alarm
and lights to indicate if the protection is still operating. Although
the unit is designed to take numerous surges, the life of the
unit would depend upon the severity of the surge that has taken
place.
Does the whole-house protector have
a guarantee?
Yes, the unit has a 15-year material & workmanship
guarantee – in the event the unit is damaged by a surge,
Leviton will repair or replace the unit.
Is there a warranty in the event that
equipment is damaged in my home?
Yes,
in the event that any “standard white appliances”
are damaged – the whole-house protector has a replacement
or repair coverage of $10,000. “Standard white appliances”
are defined as a washer, dryer, stove, microwave oven, refrigerator,
freezer, dishwasher, and indoor HVAC equipment. For additional
information about the warranty, please refer to the Leviton –
“True Whole House Surge Protection Limited Warranty”
publication.
If I have a whole-house protector -
am I fully protected from surges?
No single device can protect the whole house from
all electrical surges. The whole-house protector serves as your
best, first line-of-defense against electrical surges. For maximum
protection, you should still use what’s commonly known as
“surge strips” or “plug-in” protectors
as a second line-of-defense against internally generated surges
or surges that may have gotten through the whole-house protector.
Damaging surges can also enter your home through DC voltages associated
with cable television, telephone, fax, and modem. So, we recommend
a third line-of-defense which is “data communications surge
protectors”.
Can I purchase surge protectors for
other equipment such as my computer and stereo equipment?
Yes,
you may purchase plug-in protectors made specifically for other
equipment in your home. For example, computer system protectors
that protect the phone line in addition to all electrical lines
are available. There is also a plug-in strip model that protects
the electrical and coax lines. Satellite line protectors are also
available. When protecting your equipment from surges, don’t
overlook any type of connection made to the unit. BHP has a variety
of surge protectors to cover almost any type of equipment.
How much are the plug-in protectors?
The coax, satellite, and phone line protectors
are only $21.95 each. The plug-in strip protector for nine (9)
electric outlets with either a coax or phone line connector is
$33.49 each. A computer system protector for cable modem users
(with nine (9) electric outlets, a phone line, and a coax line
connection) is $48.44. A nine (9) outlet protector is only $29.76.
Other surge protectors are available.
What kind of warranty comes with the
plug-in protectors?
The
plug-in protectors have Lifetime coverage for connected equipment.
Leviton will repair or replace the plug-in protector in the event
it no longer works. Also, if any connected equipment is damaged,
Leviton will repair or replace your equipment up to $50,000 in
value for as long as you own the plug-in protector.
Where can I purchase the whole-house
or plug-in surge protectors?
The whole-house and plug-in protectors can be purchased
at your local BHP office. Cash or credit card is accepted. Prices
are subject to change, consult a current price list for accurate
pricing.
