Home Energy Audit

Program Description
All Black Hills Power residential customers are eligible to conduct, on their own, an online energy audit using the Home Energy Suite tool located on BHP’s website.

Residential customers may also request a walk through audit to help identify areas where electrical energy is used and recommendations on ways to reduce energy use.  The walk-thru audit recommendations may include suggested behavioral changes, suggestions about implementing low-cost and easy to install energy-saving measures and suggestions about repairing, upgrading or replacing larger equipment or systems.

BHP customers who heat their home primarily with electric heat are eligible for a comprehensive energy audit conducted by a Building Performance Institute certified auditor.  A detailed report will be provided to the customer indicating cost effective energy savings measures.

Types of Energy Audits
Black Hills Power offers three tiers of home energy audits:

  • Tier 1 – ON-LINE ENERGY AUDIT PROGRAM: BHP offers a FREE on-line energy audit program available at www.BHPHowTo.com website. Home Energy Suite is ideal for customers interested in performing their own energy savings cost analysis.
  • Tier 2 – WALK-THROUGH ENERGY AUDIT: BHP will perform a walk-through energy audit to identify areas where electrical energy is used and recommend energy savings tips to help reduce energy use within the home.
  • Tier 3 – CERTIFIED HOME ENERGY AUDIT: Certified audit includes and inspection of insulation levels, infiltration levels; equipment efficiency and operating condition, and behavior-related factors influencing energy consumption. BHP will provide participants with a low-cost weatherization kit ($30 value), educational information on how to manage their energy usage and costs, and will refer participants to BHP's other applicable energy-efficiency programs.

Certified Energy Audits
Customers who participate in the Certified Home Energy Audit program will be offered the energy efficiency products, shown below, at no cost.  The auditor will install or instruct the participating customers on how to install these energy saving products.  Customers will also receive educational materials on how to manage their energy usage and costs.
