While much activity was going on in the Northern Black Hills, the Rapid City Light and Gas Company began furnishing the city of Rapid City with electric service. It is interesting to note the strong belief in the "free-enterprise system" by the individuals and groups who recognized the demand for electrical energy and supplied that demand. Every company serving the communities that made up Black Hills Power and Light Company was, from the beginning, privately owned and operated by individuals. All of them succeeded.
